In my practice, the most frequent cause of dry eye is blepharitis and/or meibomian gland dysfunction. Medications and poorly fitting contacts also contribute What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients? I believe in making sure the treatment matches the diagnosis. I prefer to start with lifestyle changes and topical treatment and then move to more agressive treatment as needed. Do you have a dry eye “hot button” – for example, is there a condition you feel is often overlooked or misdiagnosed, or a treatment you feel is sometimes used inappropriately? I was taught that Dry Eye is the most under-diagnosed condition in eye care. I think that patients with severe cases are aware and get treatment. It is the mild cases that have been overlooked for years. What makes you exceptionally well qualified to help dry eye patients? At my office, patients are scheduled to allow for sufficient time to get to know the patients and select treatments that suit them. What are some of your favorite products for dry eye (Rx, OTC, consumer)? Every patient is different and respond to products differently. I do believe that improved eyelid hygiene will benefit most people, including those with dry eye. I do like non-preserved Systane and Maxitears.
