Opinion:
What is the most frequent cause of dry eye amongst patients you have treated?
Unrecognized Meibomian gland disease.
What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients?
Stop using a washcloth as a compress, it is a waste of time. Use a rice baggy.
Do you have a dry eye "hot button" - for example, is there a condition you feel is often overlooked or misdiagnosed, or a treatment you feel is sometimes used inappropriately?
Restasis and mild topical steroids used indefinitely without addressing Meibomian gland disease.
What makes you exceptionally well qualified to help dry eye patients?
1) I don't do refractive surgery.
2) I have published in the medical literature and I am aware of the conflicts of interest that surround most of the 'famous' dry eye MDs involved in the drug trials.
3) Therefore, I go my own way on treatment.
What are some of your favorite products for dry eye (Rx, OTC, consumer)?
Rice.
Ocusoft lid hygiene treatments.
